- 1. This figurine of chimpanzees, a gift from Ryan’s father, commemorates a case of mistaken identity during their trip to the Mississippi River when she was 4 years old. “He said, ‘Hey, look at this big wide river. This is the Mississippi.’ I said, ‘No, that’s not it. The Mississippi is not a river.’ I thought the Mississippi was a monkey.”
- 2. The Atlanta Tipoff Club gave this plaque to Ryan in honor of All-American Dawn Staley (Col ’92) being named Naismith Female Player of the Year in 1992. Staley helped lead the Cavaliers to a 110-21 record during her years at U.Va.
- 3. Mary Chapin Carpenter signed this poster for Ryan after a cancer benefit concert on May 11, 2001. Ryan, a cancer survivor, and the late Emily Couric sang backup vocals on one song, “Passionate Kisses.” Carpenter signed the poster, “You can sing backup anytime. With love and admiration.”
- 4. This jersey commemorates Ryan’s 700th career win, a 68-57 victory over University of Maryland, Baltimore County, on Nov. 13, 2009.
- 5. Ryan received this statuette in July 2008 when she was inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame, honoring her record of 12 appearances in the NCAA Sweet Sixteen, three straight trips to the Final Four, three ACC Tournament titles and 11 ACC regular-season crowns.
- 6. This basketball, signed by players and staff, was given to Ryan honoring her 25th anniversary as U.Va.’s head women’s coach.
- 7. Ryan wore this hard hat with the U.Va. logo while the JPJ arena was under construction. “We had to have a hard hat on when we went around showing JPJ to the recruits, so they gave me my own hard hat.”
- 8. Ryan’s bookcase includes A Light in the Attic by children’s author Shel Silverstein. A fan of Silverstein’s verse, Ryan can rattle off lines like “Ickle me, pickle me, tickle me too.” The book is a gift from the Z Society congratulating and commending her in her fight against pancreatic cancer. The inscription, from Euripides, reads, “To persevere, trusting in what you hope for, is courage.”
